Corrosion Prevention on Two Sulfuric Acid Tanks

TMI Coatings, Inc. (TMI) is a certified QP1 and QP2 coating contractor; we specialize in corrosion prevention. Corrosion prevention is necessary to protect the structural integrity of tanks, piping, supports, etc. Recently, TMI was hired by a leader in the treatment of potable water to coat two sulfuric acid storage tanks at their facility in Louisiana. The tanks had significant corrosion, and TMI turned to their proven two-coat system to resolve the owner’s issues.

Procedure:

  • TMI high pressure washed the tanks and mechanically abraded any areas with corrosion.
  • After conversations with the owner once surface preparation was complete, severe pitting was found that was not visible during the initial inspection. As a result, the owner elected for an additional coat of epoxy on the roof of the tanks to alleviate potential risks down the road.
  • TMI applied two full coats of a rust-inhibiting epoxy primer by brush and roller.
  • Finally, TMI used a PPG high gloss aliphatic urethane topcoat, which has very good color and gloss retention.

Outcome:

At the end of the project, the customer was pleased with the product received and TMI’s ability to complete the work safely. A few months later, the customer also referred us to their sister plant in Mississippi on a tank painting project. Another project completed by TMI. Safety. Quality. On time. In that order.
