Great Lake Cheese, a food manufacturer, had existing coatings fail due to moisture accumulation on their ceiling beams resulting in severe corrosion. The company asked TMI Coatings, Inc. (TMI) to restore their deteriorating ceiling beams and install a rust-inhibitive epoxy coating system that would prevent similar issues in the future.
Procedure:
- Removed all plaster and metal lath around ceiling beam enclosure.
- Prepared ceiling surface by solvent wipe cleaning to remove dirt, debris, and other contaminants.
- Utilized power tools with vacuum attachments to further prepare the steel surfaces for the subsequent coating materials.
- Applied a full prime coat followed by a full topcoat of Amerlock to the entire ceiling and ceiling beams.
Outcome:
The new coating system allows the owner to clean their facility with ease thanks to the smooth epoxy coating finish. Additionally, the coating system is USDA compliant and suitable for use in food plants as well as high-moisture areas. TMI completed the project in a three-day timeframe while the plant was shut down. The facility manager stated, “The project seemed to go smoothly, they were autonomous, there were talks along the way with TMI’s Superintendent over the weekend and all was good.”
