Grain Bin Roof Waterproofing

An agriculture company hired TMI Coatings, Inc. (TMI) to resolve issues with water getting into their large grain bin; however, they did not want to take the bin out of service or replace the roof. After speaking with the facility manager and reviewing the site, TMI found that most of the water seepage was getting in from along the seams and penetrations of the roof. We explained that we could coat along the areas and create a waterproof seal, which would help prevent future corrosion.

Procedure-

  • Sensitive equipment was covered to protect from any overspray
  • Pressure-washed and further hand/power tool cleaned to remove any loose coating, rust, and other contaminants
  • Mechanically abraded all surfaces to clean and roughen for the new coating
  • Primed the surface to reduce corrosion and support subsequent coat adhesion
  • Urethane elastomer coating was applied to cover the seams and around the penetrations to provide a watertight seal

Outcome-

TMI provided the customer with a waterproof solution for their roof, and the cooperative did not have to take the bin out of service or shut it down for an extended period. Due to the properties of the elastomer, it will not crack, chip, or peel due to the continual temperature changes. This system will also protect against corrosion and resist chemicals naturally found in the environment. The facility manager stated, “The staff worked safely and professionally through harsh weather.  Our bin is now waterproof and ready for spring.”
