Gypsum Fireproofing Installed at Parking Garage

Fireproofing material is necessary to protect the structural integrity of buildings when a fire occurs. A facilities services company contracted TMI Coatings, Inc. (TMI) to install new gypsum fireproofing on critical structural members in their parking garage. The structural steel had massive amounts of corrosion present. The existing coating was removed to address the corrosion. TMI was then brought in to install new two-hour-rated gypsum fireproofing material.

Procedure:

  • All existing structural steel was sandblasted to remove 100% of the rust, and steel thickness tests were performed.
  • Additional surface preparation was completed as needed.
  • TMI taped off the areas to receive the fireproofing.
  • Finally, we applied the gypsum fireproofing material at a minimum of 1-1/4” thickness to achieve the two-hour fire rating. The coating was installed in several passes. And multiple mobilizations to minimize parking interference.

Outcome:

The essential fireproofing material protects the critical structural steel components for many years. TMI was able to complete this project over multiple mobilizations due to only having access to a portion of the area at a time. TMI completed this project within the owner’s tight time frame and, most importantly, safely.
