Indoor Pipe Painting Project with Tnemec

TMI Coatings, Inc. (TMI) was contracted to coat several hundred linear feet of large-diameter piping with a Tnemec coating system. The water pipes hadn’t been painted for over 20 years and desperately needed a new protective coating system due to extensive corrosion. TMI suggested several coats of a high-build, surface-tolerant epoxy mastic ideal for water facilities.

Procedure:

  • The owner identified all the sensitive equipment that needed to be poly-covered to ensure it was adequately protected.
  • TMI ensured the pipes weren’t sweating and scheduled the work during the appropriate season.
  • One hundred percent of the surfaces were power tool cleaned to remove the old flaking coating system and any pack rust/heavily corroded areas. An anchor pattern was created with the power tools, so the new industrial paint adhered to the metal pipes.
  • TMI then applied two full coats of Tnemec Series 138 per the manufacturer’s recommended dry film thickness. The coating was applied by brush and roller in the designated color-coded system.

Outcome:

The water services manager said, “The superintendent was very professional, and his attention to detail was the best I’ve seen. He cared about the health and safety of his guys and worked long days. He made sure to come to me with any concerns and went the extra mile to make sure I was happy with their work.” The piping is now protected from corrosion due to the continual harsh environments of the water treatment plant.
