New Cooperative Silo Repair and Coating

In the beginning of 2023, TMI Coatings, Inc. (TMI) was called to three different sites to give a comprehensive silo repair plan to each site due to severe spalling concrete and the need for waterproofing. TMI put together a proposal detailing the scope of work, amount of restoration, and coating for each. After long conversations with the owner, TMI was awarded all three silo repair projects and mobilized in the fall to start work.

Detailed description of work:

  1. Before starting, the owner cleared access to work areas and coordinated with electrical companies to de-energize power lines.
  2. Surface preparation included high-pressure washing and hand/power tool cleaning of corroded areas.
  3. Restoration included sounding out soft/punky concrete to ensure a sound substrate was achieved. Before installing the new mortar, TMI applied a zinc primer to the exposed rebar, which was formulated explicitly for marginally prepared surfaces. Then, TMI installed a fast-setting, high-build cementitious mortar to the surrounding plane.
  4. To fortify against external elements, TMI applied a two-coat waterproof acrylic system. This 100% solids coating system prevents wind-driven rain and won’t chip, peel, or crack with changing seasons.
  5. Finally, TMI installed a “New Cooperative” brand-approved logo to finish the project.

Outcome:

These New Cooperative sites are now well-protected. TMI was able to complete this work with minimal disturbance to their harvest operations. TMI was able to complete this work swiftly and safely.
