Northern Natural Gas Pipe Painting Project

TMI Coatings, Inc. (TMI) contracted with Northern Natural Gas company, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy, to sandblast and coat several miles of piping at several districts in Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Iowa. 

No project is too large for TMI Coatings.

Procedure:

  • TMI protected the ground during surface preparation to collect spent abrasive and comply with environmental requirements. Good housekeeping was always required. The site was clean and organized.
  • Poly-covered/masked and protected vulnerable equipment.
  • Prepared and sandblasted the piping with blast grit per SSPC-SP 10 Near White metal blast cleaning (NACE NO. 2). A hot work permit was issued daily to TMI Coatings before sandblasting. While on-site completing work, all the proper PPE. Those include safety glass, hard hats, and fire retardant coveralls. 
  • We collected abrasive for disposal in steel drums.
  • Primed with PPG zinc-rich primer, then used an epoxy intermediate coat of PPG Amercoat 370, and finished with Pitthane Ultra Gloss Urethane.

Outcome:

TMI Coatings field crew was able to complete sandblasting and coating of several miles of piping. Northern Natural Gas can rest assured their infrastructure has the protection necessary to resist deterioration for many years to come!
