TMI Coatings, Inc. (TMI) recently coated a large liquid oxygen tank for a manufacturer of chemicals and gases used in the energy, medical, and industrial markets. The liquid oxygen tank had several layers of old paint that were flaking and peeling on the outside metal jacket. TMI devised a plan to complete this project without interfering with the company’s normal daily routines.
Procedure:
- TMI high pressure washed the surfaces with 4,000 psi pressure washers to remove the dirt, dust, and containments.
- We also mechanically abraded areas with rust to ensure only coated over a sound substrate. This additional step also creates an anchor pattern so the new coating would better adhere.
- TMI then applied a full coat of a rust-inhibitive epoxy primer to protect the substrate from corrosion.
- Finally, an acrylic polyurethane topcoat was applied to all surfaces to provide color stability, and improve gloss retention. The two coats were applied by brush and roll to ensure no overspray on cars and buildings.
Outcome:
After the project, the owner’s representative stated, “the tank looks really good. The guys did well, and everything turned out really well.” The tank is now protected for many years to come.
