TMI Coatings, Inc. (TMI) recently completed a paper machine painting project for a global tissue company in Wisconsin. During operation, the machine introduces constant moisture, which deteriorates the existing paint and leads to excessive corrosion. The owner had a minimal window to complete the work, and there was very little notice prior to the outage dates. TMI was able to staff the project with two crews of six men working around the clock so the project could be completed within the 72-hour window allowed.
Procedure:
- A pre-job site visit was conducted with TMI’s project manager, TMI’s job superintendent, and the owner’s representative to ensure that all parties were on the same page prior to job start. At this time, all project details were discussed, and all removable components were identified for removal to allow TMI’s crew access to all areas to be painted.
- TMI’s crew worked alongside plant employees to clean and degrease the surface to remove all adhesion-inhibiting contaminants prior to further surface preparation.
- The machine was further prepared using needle guns and chipping hammers to remove all pack rust and any loose rust/coating. After mechanically preparing the surfaces, TMI solvent wiped to ensure that any lingering contaminants were removed prior to coating application.
- TMI applied two full coats of a fast-curing epoxy coating material designed for steel protection in industrial environments. This coating is used in various industrial environments to protect steel substrates from corrosion and is suitable for marginally prepared surfaces. It was also selected for its “quick curing” properties, which allowed the owner to start up the machine in a timely manner upon TMI’s completion of the work.
Outcome:
TMI completed this project ahead of the projected schedule, allowing the owner to start up their machine earlier than anticipated. Attention to detail, thorough surface preparation, and constant communication between parties allowed for successful project completion.
