TMI Coatings, Inc. is currently in the final phase of restoring a 4,000,000-gallon ground storage reservoir for the City of Apple Valley and KLM Engineering who are the structural engineers managing this project. This reservoir is one of the more visible tanks in Apple Valley as it resides on a major road within the City (County Road 46). This project has included the complete removal and replacement of all coatings on the interior and exterior of the ground storage tank reservoir, structural modifications including installation of a complete roof handrail system which will accommodate telecommunications equipment and provide OSHA compliant roof access, and landscape restoration.

Procedures:

  • All coatings were removed by abrasive blasting. The interior floor, exterior roof, and the entire shell wall were blasted using the Faster Blaster – a large vacuum shot-blaster that scaled the water reservoir itself. This new technology glides over surfaces while removing old coatings, debris, and dirt to prepare the structure for painting. The Faster Blaster saves us considerable time and enhances the quality of our work.
  • The remaining areas of the tank including the exterior roof knuckle, interior ceiling, and shell wall utilized conventional abrasive blasting with coal slag. The exterior required containment of abrasives to meet SSPC guidelines which were completed with the combined efforts of the vacuum blasting and a unique rolling scaffold system.

Outcome:

The new coatings system consists of an interior NSF approved three-coat system. The first coat is a prime coat of moisture-cure zinc urethane and two coats of a polyamidoamine epoxy and an exterior 4-coat system including a prime coat of moisture-cure zinc urethane. The second coat is a polyamidoamine epoxy intermediate coat, an aliphatic acrylic polyurethane second intermediate coat, and a fluoropolymer coat for the third and final coat.

Scott Kriese, Project Field Supervisor at KLM, said, “Everyone [at TMI Coatings] has done an outstanding job.” Completion of the reservoir will include 2 City of Apple Valley logos which will provide a new fresh look for the landmark for many years to come.
