After discovering failed manufacturer’s coatings in their steel stairwell stringers and associated structural beams, a large manufacturing company asked TMI Coatings, Inc. (TMI) to help correct coating failures. TMI was asked to apply epoxy coatings to protect the existing substrates and provide an aesthetic finish for the facility.
Procedure:
- Prepared surfaces by solvent wiping, abrading, and vacuum cleaning to remove dirt, debris, and other contaminants.
- Utilized hand and power tools to clean steel members and removed failed coatings to create a more suitable surface for subsequent coatings.
- Primed all bare steel from surface preparation.
- Applied a full top coat of a polyamide epoxy to all surfaces.
Outcome:
TMI thoroughly coated all structural beams and stairway stringers. Any areas experiencing failed coatings were treated with a primer to protect the steel. The epoxy finish coating provides corrosion protection while creating an aesthetically pleasing finish. The final finish was a smooth white on all areas except the stair handrails which were painted in bright yellow for safety. This project was safely completed on-time and within budget.
