Water and wastewater infrastructure presents coating challenges that few industrial contractors are equipped to handle. Potable water contact surfaces require NSF/ANSI 61-compliant lining systems that protect the coating from the water, and the water from the coating. Elevated water towers demand specialized rigging platforms engineered for each tank geometry, whether spherical, toro-spherical, single-column, ellipsoidal, or multi-legged. Clarifiers corrode from the inside out, with structural steel and concrete surfaces subjected to continuous biological and chemical attack that accelerates coating breakdown. Confined space work, wet wells, below-grade piping, and enclosed tank interiors, requires permitting, air monitoring, ventilation, and rescue planning that most painting contractors simply cannot provide.
TMI Coatings has performed water and wastewater coating and restoration work across the United States for over 40 years. Our project history includes multi-million gallon potable water storage tanks, elevated towers for municipalities in Texas, Colorado, Minnesota, Illinois, and Oklahoma, clarifier restoration contracts where our performance earned repeat awards across multiple structures, structural steel repair and recoating for tainter gates at Texas spillways, and confined-space pipe coating over 100 feet below grade for metropolitan utility authorities. We hold AMPP QP1 and QP2 certifications, self-perform all work with our own trained crews, and operate under documented quality and safety systems that municipal owners, water authorities, and their consulting engineers can rely on from bid through project closeout.
Interior and exterior coating and structural restoration for elevated water storage tanks in all configurations, spherical, toro-spherical, single-column pedestal, multi-legged lattice, and ellipsoidal. TMI designs and deploys custom rigging and access platforms for each tank geometry to ensure complete surface coverage. Services include lead abatement on towers with legacy coatings, weld and steel repairs, NSF/ANSI 61 compliant interior lining systems, and exterior coating systems engineered for long-term atmospheric and UV exposure. TMI has submitted elevated tank rehabilitation projects for SSPC Structure Award recognition.
Surface preparation, structural steel repair, and high-performance lining application for water treatment and wastewater clarifiers, including interior and exterior surfaces, mechanism arms, drive assemblies, and concrete floors and walls. TMI has completed clarifier restoration at multiple Texas water treatment plants, earning repeat contracts on successive structures from the same municipal client. Work includes Job Hazard Analysis preparation, confined space procedures where required, and full project documentation for municipal owner records.
Interior wall, ceiling, and structural coating for water treatment plant filtration buildings, pump stations, chemical feed rooms, and process buildings, including surface preparation of masonry, concrete block, and steel, coating selection for moisture-tolerant environments, and compliance with facility safety requirements for occupied or partially operational treatment plants. TMI completed a multi-room simultaneous interior painting project at the Le Center, MN Water Treatment Plant filtration facility, and a full-scope interior restoration for the City of Lincoln including asbestos and lead abatement, coating removal, and window replacement.
Structural steel repair, sandblasting, priming, and coating for tainter gates, spillway gates, dam infrastructure, fiberglass dome restoration, and other specialty water control structures. TMI repaired and recoated five tainter gates at the Lake Fork Spillway for the Sabine River Authority of Texas, including full structural steel replacement of bottom gate components, shim plates, stiffeners, and braces, followed by sandblasting, priming, finish coating, and new seal installation, all performed with OSHA-compliant full-body harness tie-off and safety netting over the spillway.

Wet wells, enclosed tank interiors, and below-grade utility structures are confined spaces requiring formal entry programs — atmospheric monitoring, ventilation, permit systems, and standby rescue capability. TMI self-manages confined space entry on water and wastewater projects, with trained crews, properly equipped rescue personnel, and full documentation of entry procedures. We have lined wet wells for major utility suppliers, painted large-diameter underground piping more than 100 feet below grade for the Metropolitan Council, and performed interior tank restoration across a wide range of enclosed water infrastructure — all with the confined space discipline that municipal owners and their safety managers expect.
Since 1985, TMI Coatings has protected tanks, towers, floors, roofs, and industrial facilities for manufacturers, municipalities, and utilities across the continental United States. Our AMPP QP1 and QP2 certifications, in-house trained crews, and Customer Confidence Guarantee mean every project is completed to specification, on schedule, and with full documentation.
